Louis Mazza

I live and work in Philadelphia, PA, and have been a teacher and an artist for 15 years. I received my M.F.A. from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 2022.

My work deals with men and their relationship to masculine ideals and sexuality

I’m interested in the interplay between obscurity and visibility in an image and use this as a device to hide or reveal information for the viewer to examine questions of authenticity and superficiality.

The works are often indirect; they suggest or make allusions. They hedge. They cruise. They are like furtive glances; fragmented and fleeting. They don't come right out and say what they are.

The media I work with fluctuates between digital and analog. Often, compositions are photographed and then disassembled and re-used in other works. Occasionally, they become glued down - fixed on paper.

I am interested in the relationships that occur between disparate image fragments and the associations one can make based on the way things appear.

The ability to remove an image from its source and place it near other images leads to unexpected shifts in composition and meaning.
